It’s always good to see a cat doing it big with other folks, and take time for themselves to produce quality stuff as well. Swiff D has done just that. Known for making tracks for Pac Div, Busta, Anthony Hamilton, Dipset, Snoop Dogg and many others, he put out this high energy, with some chill tracks, beat tape called Ladders. After listening to it about a half a dozen plus times, I think… I know this is a cat you shouldn’t be f*ck’n with. Driving around, loud at a club, or just kicking with your people you’ll definitely get some head nods from it. Download Swiff D – Ladders here, and check him out on Twitter. BIG thanks Swiff D for tweeting this. Keep doing what you’re doing.

Some folks whistle while they work, others find tunes and crank it up. Earlier this year I got an email about this beat tape by The Underachievers titled The Underachievers Volume 2. I want to say I was in the middle of a project when I downloaded it. I put it on, and left it on all day. I can honestly say The Underachievers Volume 2 put me in “GO” mode. The Underachievers have put together a collection of beats that got made, but weren’t picked up for some reason or another. Based on my own listening experience, this is definitely worth listening to. It’s a heavy instrumental album with nicely placed samples. Job well done. Download The Underachievers – The Underachievers Volume 2 on Band Camp. BIG thanks to Anthony for shooting this over to me.

I’m a long time fan of Black Spade, so it was a really cool to get a chance to chat with him about past projects, stuff he’s working on now, and the future of Black Spade. He put out the mixtape Build and Destroy, and most recently a beat tape called The Day We Landed. I can’t stop playing either one. I met up with Black Spade at I Ced’s place when they were taking a break from working on some Hawthorne Headhunts’ tracks. I got a little insight about who Black Spade is and what his future plans are. I did learn one important lesson about doing interviews- Don’t stop recording until you leave, because we talked about everything. I know I’ll be doing another interview with him when he drops back into town. Check out Black Spade – The Day We Landed. BIG thanks Black Spade for taking the time, and making the music. Keep it going. BIG shout out to I Ced for the sound effects (ha ha) and the place.
My man Haz Solo wised me up on Rufio and his beat tape entitled The Edgewater. Haz is a cool cat and collaborates with folks from all over, so it didn’t surprise me when he said Rufio is from Sacramento. What did surprise me, is how quick Rufio cranked out a beat tape. Not only instrumental tracks, but tracks also featuring a few emcees. Yes Haz is on it too. In the email Haz explains how Rufio came up with the name The Edgewater, “He was in my neck of the woods (Madison, WI) last week and I challenged him to make a beat tape during his stay and entitle it the name of the Hotel he was staying in.” Sometimes it’s as simple as that folks. Download Rufio – The Edgewater here. BIG thanks to Haz Solo for keeping me in the know.

I got an email from Deca One about his beat tape called Floating World. The first thing that came to mind is, “this kid must have been high when he thought of the title” … and then I played it. Cloud Knockin’ has a very chill vibe will have you floating in no time. Deca One also gives a good balance with the 8-bit sound and sampling, and still maintains an outta this world feeling. He also throws in a nice remix of Badu’s Soldier. In Floating World I hear the potential. Download Deca One – Floating World from BandCamp. Also check Deca One out on Twitter, MySpace, & Tumblr. BIG thanks Deca One for sending in your beat tape. Keep going man.

When I used to live in Long Beach, Krispy Kreme had the ingenious idea of opening a location adjacent to the East Division station of the LBPD. It’s been a minute since I’ve called Long Beach home, but I’ll bet good money that this Donut Shop has weathered the recent economic storm.
The most visible Donut Shop in the LA area is clearly Randy’s Donuts, off the 405. However, it’s Donut Man, a little shop quite a few miles outside the city proper (Glendora…just Google it) that inspires my actual Donut cravings. Kelis’ Milkshake got nothing on a limited edition, (ie. seasonal) Strawberry Donut from Donut Man.
Speaking of limited edition releases, this six-pack of unreleased & re-mastered tracks from the Dilla archives was pressed & packaged into the first J Dilla Serato release back in May. As a big thank you for everyone that supported this project, Stones Throw let them loose today. You can download it here.
The good folks at Moovmnt shot me an email about the recent project they’re sponsoring, B. Lewis’Mercury Backburner. Every time I check out Moovmnt.com I’m always amazed by the new folks they find right in my own backyard (the West Coast). B. Lewis is a cat from San Jose that makes these hypnotizing, laid back, head nodding beats. Back On Track is one of the more explosive tracks that got me hooked. I’m sure B. Lewis was getting a DâM-Funk vibe on Electrified Slider. Overall Mercury Backburner is a good beat tape. Play it and by the end of the day, you will have gone through it a few times. Download B. Lewis – Mercury Backburner here. BIG thanks to the good folks at Moovmnt for the heads up. Keep doing what you’re doing.

If you want to blast off into space on the soul train, Leonard Dstroy’sHigher Vibrations is for you. The opening track Technical Difficulties had me cranking up the volume. When I got to Sunset Marquis (the second track) I knew I was in for a wild ride. The 8-bit sound is really big these days, but Leonard Dstroy adds a twist to it. I can’t put my finger on it- could it be that he uses a range of samples, or could it be those drums?!? Either way, I got it on heavy rotation. Download Leonard Dstroy – Higher Vibrations at BandCamp. Also check out the LennySlitz Project. BIG thanks Leonard Dstroyfor making the music.

Al JaZz teamed up with Spon on Brazillionaires, and now he’s back with MWCC: Mozambique West Coast Coalition. Teaming up with Dareenzo, & Origimoz they cranked out an instrumental tribute to the west coast. Now I don’t know what Mozambique’s west coast sounds like, but the way this sounds they might have a city called Compton too. Al JaZzDareenzo, & Origimoz did a bang up job on this one. You would’ve thought MWCC was done in L.A. somewhere. I’m guessing their style is a combination of the 2 locations. Either way you got to check MWCC out. B+C gets lots of emails everyday, and I’m glad to read them all. When the emails have links that lead to gems, I go bananas. That’s what happened when I got an email from BoomBaptist with a link to his Beat Tape. BoomBaptist posted the Beat Tape to see if folks were getting a feel for it, and I did for sure. I have it in heavy rotation on the ipod now. This beat tape is a little longer then most, but by the time you get to the end you’re waiting to hear some more. If this is what BoomBaptist cranks out on a regular, I can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for the next project. Download BoomBaptist Beat Tape here. Check out BoomBaptist on MySpace, BlogSpot, SoundCloud, and Twitter. BIG thanks Thesaurus Rex aka BoomBaptist for sending that in.
