Recap: B+C at SXSW 2012

I can’t tell you how much fun I had at SXSW. For the first time at SXSW I rolled out without a plan, and waiting to embrace the weirdness Austin has to offer. My man Butcher Bear from Insect Records and Kone scooped me up from the airport and we were off. A quick stop for some food, dropped off my bags and we were back out to hit up SXSW! Butch took me to this bar with a big outside area and 2 stages. Checked out some friends of his that were rocking out called Football. High kicks, hard guitar riffs and a lot of drinking. Later that night we headed out to catch DJ Skeez and Miz Korona. Real talk catch Miz Korona when she comes to your town. Some of that night was a blur, but I’m sure we saw more groups and ended with some pizza… I think. Thursday was jam packed with stuff to do. I headed to the convention center to check out SXSW’s music poster show Flatstock and kick it with the fellas of DKNG. A free poster show is a graphic designers dream. I wanted to buy up all kinds of posters. I could have stayed there all day, but had to keep it moving. Next up the street was Record Breakin’s showcase where they were spinning 7″ and 45″ all day. It was at Loft 718 and it had a nice lounge vibe to it. Good music and got to meet some great folks…also scored Lee Fields – Faithful Man album. Thank you Truth & Soul, very dope album. Later that night I made my way to Insect Records’ showcase. Words can’t express how dope that was. I’ll just say you had to be there, I mean look at the lineup! The next day met with Kone and ran into Teeko and the Starship Connection crew. Heard some ill beats from Nameless, and officially met SelfSays. That is my dude right there. Kone had another showcase not that far away, so we all rolled out. That one was something like a private recording session with Kone, Sonnymoon,and Mast. Really dope vibe, and after that some random house party. That was a little crazy, so we headed back to the bars for more music and drinks. Had a wild van ride and meet Lorn and Jeremiah Jae. Nothing but good times. Getting down to the end of my trip Butcher picked me up and we headed to an apartment complex that was having their own showcase, crazy right?!?! There I got to meet a great Austin beat maker named Boom Baptist, and kick it for a bit. It was a great way to end the heavy partying with the sun shining and a pool side showcase. SXSW is something everyone should check out. Go without a plan or with a plan, you are going to see some sh*t that will enrich your life. Next time I’m planning on a longer trip. Pheo – They Soulection (EP)

Pheo is one of my Hip Hop staples on the iPod. From the Word To Your Blogger mixtape to his latest project, They Soulection (EP), the quality is up there. Pheo also connects with other great artists like the lovely Nikko Gray on Who Unplugged Your Halo. I just want to connect the dots right: Pheo’s Drop (2012) samples Pharcyde’s Drop (1995), which sampled the Beasty Boys’ The New Style (1985). Drop is that bass heavy, get the f*ck up and dance track. Mad props to S-X for doing that track right. I can’t leave out my man AFTA-1 on How Eye. I knew Pheo and AFTA-1 were a deadly combo on Lil’ Bit Of Ice from the Wriot! project. If you haven’t heard of Pheo yet, I’m sure your favorite music magazines, blogs, channels, and stations will be playing his tracks soon. Get Pheo – They Soulection (EP) on Band Camp. NickNack’s State Machine is a good solid album with an eclectic sound. With a little bit of sampling, scratching, retro sounds, and a funky groove it’s a good mix of tracks that has a good progressive flow. I dig beat tapes that also show the diversity of a producer by including a few tracks with emcees on them. The last few tracks on State Machine features A.Dd+, Reggie Coby, Dowrong, Lowkey, Crew 54 and Bavu Blakes. Support some good talented folks like NickNack. The good folks at Knock Study/ Knock Steady let me know their good friend EOM, Elements Of Music, dropped an instrumental that I would dig. After listening to some Duke Westlake I figured some good things were coming from that camp. Elements Of Music’s album Further is a well composed collective of sounds that makes great music. There are a few samples in there that you might recognize, but the way that EOM uses them almost makes you forget that they are samples. The combination of J. Bizness and Richard Wright is like chocolate and peanut butter. You like both separately, but together is some other level sh!t. With all the guest appearances J. Bizness and Richard Wright are reaching for outer space on this one. Open Minded is the best thing that has dropped this year, and you can quote me on that . I mean I was having a hard time trying to select tracks for this post, and that man Noa James is a beast. J. Bizness, Richard Wright, Skeem Price, Trek Life, and Val The Vandle that track Go! is like an all-star team. Open Minded is totally worth any price they set for it. This is one of the most laid-back chill albums I’ve heard. Sinitus Tempo’s Journey puts me in a hypnotic jazzy trance. Bolivia started off and I immediately envisioned people in a Richard Neutra home with some Eames furniture. Folks are sipping on Cognac or wine talking about the music selection tonight. The title track, Journey, will take you on a trip to the many corners of Jazz and back again. It’ll get your head nodding for sure. With the bonus track, Raw Jazz, you’ll want to get your dancing shoes on. Sinitus Tempo produced an all around good solid album. Download it Sinitus Tempo – Journey on Band Camp. I don’t think I have to tell you about these two gentlemen who are staples in LA’s music scene. Mr. Rhettmatic has a gang of albums and has collaborated with great folks like Eric Bobo, Buff1 and has DJ’d events like the Do Over. And House Shoes, what can I say?! If you know House Shoes you know he’s not just the guy from Detroit that plays records. Beside the given House Shoes is the connector, producer, co-signer, and coming out with his LP later this year. I’m guessing you’ll get a sneak peek of his album and some exclusive tracks. It’ll be good times. You can count on these cats to bring the heat. And I can’t forget the fellas spinning great tunes Inka One, Ben Diggin, and DJ Analog will be in the house. Head to Boombox to get a quality show.

The Awful Great (PCH & Makeshift) – Superman

This track is BANG’N! I haven’t heard of this cat PCH before, but the man is a monster. PCH and Makeshift are The Awful Great and they are bringing the heat with SUPERMAN. I think this is my new “get pumped up hype” track. I feel like getting out of my chair and running 10 miles or something. Can’t wait to check out what else is coming from The Awful Great.

On a side note Makeshift has this ill mixtape called On Purpose Mixtape. Back in the days beats that were/are the illest with Makeshift lyrics on them are truly dope. I had to spin it a few times, the first round to listen to all the beats you love, and the second round for the lyrics. Rounds three and four are to take it all in.
