One Truth – Man vs. Woman
The first thing that pops into my mind when people mention “spoken word artists” is political (or whatever topic that’s currently socially conscious) rhythmical rants. One night J1 invited me to Transmissions at Grand Star to check out this cat One Truth. Man, was that an experience. One Truth had a three-piece band called MugPush and a style far removed from other poets I’ve seen. It felt more like a hip hop or jazz show. Point is, One Truth changed my whole perspective of spoken word artists. His album Soundtrack To Life: New Beginnings also reflects that- it’s one you’ll bump in your car. Check out One Truth on MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube. Buy One Truth’s Soundtrack To Life: New Beginnings. BIG thanks J1 for the heads up.
The professor of Funk J1 aka THE DEER schools us on Parliament Funkadelic with Cosmic Slop. Take A Trip made me think about every album I owned that sampled those tracks, and that was a dope trip. Cosmic Slop will make you want to dig for more funk, and at the very least will get you out of your seat and dance. J1 drops stuff on us that educates and/or gives us a better appreciation for music (in my case, inspires creativity). If you can catch up with him and chat about music, J1 will definitely drop some knowledge on you. Download Cosmic Slop here and if this doesn’t get you hooked on funk…I don’t know what will. Enjoy. BIG thanks J1 for another dope mix.
Track List:
Parliament – P-funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)
Funkadelic – A Joyful Process
Eddie Hazel – Frantic Moment
Parliament – One Of Those Funky Things
Parliament – (Gloryholastoopid) Pin The Tale On The Funky
Parliament – Bop Gun (Endangered Species)
Parliament – Let’s Play House
Parliament – All Your Goodies Are Gone
Parliament – I’ve Been Watchin You (Move Your Sexy Body)
Take A Trip will definitely take you on a trip. I rocked it the first time, and mentally went through my albums figuring out who sampled what. The second time I played it I was enjoying the original tracks, so I played it a 3rd time straight. J1 is throwing out the knowledge on this one. He breaks out classics that artists from Mary j., Mos Def, Dr. Dre, to J. Dilla have sampled from artisits like Brenda Russell, L.T.D., Howard Robert’s Quartet, and Ronnie Laws; just to name a few you may have heard of. Going from The Stashbox to Take A Trip shows the range that J1 has as a DJ, producer, and drummer. Take A Trip will get any DJ or producer to think heavy on their next sample. If you’re like me and love checking out where samples come from (the original tracks), this is the podcast for you. Download Take A Trip here. Check out what else J1 is up to on MySpace and Twitter. BIG thanks J1 for another dope exclusive.

“Can I get some real HIP HOP?!” That’s what I hear folks say from time to time, but I think I found it. Well, it found me. I got an email from these cats letting me know J1 turned them on to the site. They enjoyed it, and got some stuff for me to check out. Now it was way late and I was ready to call it a day. I downloaded the Muamin Collective’s album “World B. Free”, and just wanted a quick listen before bed. I wrote these cats back after listening to a few tracks. I ended up listening to the whole thing, it’s hot. I woke up the next day and rocked it on the way to the office. Just some background on the album title “World B. Free” it’s named after the old Cleveland Cavs power forward. This is real hip hop, so download World B. Free here, and head to Muamin Collection on BandCamp to get everything else these cats are crankin out. Yes its that’s hot. BIG thanks aLiVE for gettin at me wit this and J1 for passin the word. Check out Maumin Collective on MySpace.

J1 is puttin in work! I mean this brotha’s crankin it out like crazy. James Brown (R.I.P.) ain’t got nothing on this cat. Just to give you an idea of what I’m talking about; J1 DJ’s at a few spots around LA, is in 2 bands, took time to crank out a podcast for Beats+Crates, few days later plays at the Natural History Museum with Dam Funk, and cranked out YouTube. And that’s just the stuff I know about. I feel like I ran a 5K in a minute givin you the run down. The cool thing is, this is quality stuff J1 is crankin out. YouTube has got a jazzy, hip hop, with a twist of funk to it. I dig it as much as the Attack of the Deer. Check fo yo-self. Download YouTube here and check J1 on MySpace. BIG thanks to the fam J1 & HVW8.

I Don’t Sleep…I was cruisin around the HVW8’s site to see what’s new with them. I was doing some mad reading and scoping out some paintings they had posted. Then I ran across this crazy cover with a deer on it and a title that read, “Attack of THE DEER.” I was like “this has got to be good with some crazy deer on the cover.” Downloaded it, cranked it up in the headphones, and just played track after track. “Alone” is the first track that got me hooked to it, but it was when I got to “RUCKUS” I started telling people in the office to check it out. I stopped what I was doing and started looking up J-1, the mad beat maker of this beat tape. J-1 is out here in sunny LA by way of Cleveland kickin it with good company. He’s not only a DJ and a beat maker, but also a drummer. This multi-talented cat is jazzin his way into your headphones, so keep your ears open. Download Attackof THE DEER and check out J-1 on MySpace. BIG thanks to Ty and the HVW8 crew.
