The professor of Funk J1 aka THE DEER schools us on Parliament Funkadelic with Cosmic Slop. Take A Trip made me think about every album I owned that sampled those tracks, and that was a dope trip. Cosmic Slop will make you want to dig for more funk, and at the very least will get you out of your seat and dance. J1 drops stuff on us that educates and/or gives us a better appreciation for music (in my case, inspires creativity). I hit up the fam at Fresh Selects to see what was going down, and was given the heads up on an exclusive…Free Money mini mix.  I got Free Money from Kenny last night, and stayed up until 4am rock’n it. This mix was put together by DJ Buddy and Trek Life. Free Money is chill but with an upbeat tempo adding to Trek’s flow. This one will definitely go into your heavy rotation playlist. Take A Trip will definitely take you on a trip. I rocked it the first time, and mentally went through my albums figuring out who sampled what. The second time I played it I was enjoying the original tracks, so I played it a 3rd time straight. J1 is throwing out the knowledge on this one. He breaks out classics that artists from Mary j., Mos Def, Dr. Dre, to J. Dilla have sampled from artisits like Brenda Russell, L.T.D., Howard Robert’s Quartet, and Ronnie Laws; just to name a few you may have heard of. Going from The Stashbox to Take A Trip shows the range that J1 has as a DJ, producer, and drummer. Take A Trip will get any DJ or producer to think heavy on their next sample. I did a write up on Detroit CYDI and wanted to see what else they had in the works. I got a hold of Illingsworth, and man was I in for a surprise. Illingsworth shot me some tracks he was working on and it was like a 50 track master piece. I asked him what he’s planning on doing with it, and he just replied, “what, these are just some beats I make when I get the creativity going.” I told him “if this is what you crank out while making finished work, I’ve got to hear what you make if you did a beat tape.” I guess I said the right things because in 48 hours he cranked out Twitterverse Traveler. My jaw dropped.  Later that week he did some minor tweaks and this is what you have. Check out Illingsworth’s site, and download Twitterverse Traveler.
