Oddisee – People Hear What They See

Oddisee - People Hear What They SeeI don’t know why it took me so long to write about my man Oddisee’s latest album, People Hear What They See. Oh yeah too busy listening to it. People- I want to tell you the music is out there. I know folks say Hip Hop sucks these days, and yeah I have caught myself saying it too. BUT the good stuff is out there, like this album. Yes, I went online to iTunes and bought it. No questions. Oddisee is high on my list for cats making good music and influencing a change in the genre for the better. People Hear What They See has a little bit of it all. Ready To Rock and Do It All has that get into “GO MODE” vibe. Just listening to it makes me feel accomplished. Maybe because I picture folks cruising around town or in deep thought.  Another Grind… who shouts out Kenny Rogers?!  Don’t sit on your hands, get up and get it. Buy Oddisee – People Hear What They See on iTunes and vinyl at Fat Beats. BIG shout to Mello Music Group for keeping me in the know. And to my man Trek Life for introducing me to another creative person.

Computer Jay – Savage Planet Discotheque vol 1 & 2

Computer Jay - Savage Planet vol. 1
Computer Jay is one of the few producers I know that can move between genres seamlessly, and still keep his sound. The stuff he produces can melt or blow your mind. Either way it’s a good thing. Savage Planet Discotheque vol. 1… melted my brain and by the end rebuilt it just to it blow up again. I had to play The Dead Ends Dead End back to back. Oh man I think listening to Omni Bent is when my mind got rebuilt. A while back cruising around on the Internet I saw this video Hardships that wasn’t on vol. 1. It tripped me out. Now I’m so excited to go get vol. 2. In the meantime go buy, on vinyl if you can, Computer Jay – Savage Planet Discotheque vol. 1 and get your mind blown. BIG thanks Jay, my taste in music wouldn’t be the same without you. Keep doing what you’re doing brother.

Union – Analogtronics

What do you get when you have two Parisian producers, one a big Dilla fan and the other a Herbie Hancock jazz lover? Well OJ & Gold (Union) would say Analogtronics and I would tell you it’s some good music. With some “oohs” and chimes and a nice beat that drops a few seconds in, the Intro is a banger. Yes, that’s just the intro. Union put together a solid album with nice beats and a jazzy undertone. From Talib Kweli to Guilty Simpson, Analogtronics, has a gang of guest appearances that would impress any hip hop head. Union still shows you what they can do with the instrument tracks sprinkled throughout. I’ve been listening to Analogtronics for a week! I think I might even buy the vinyl LP pack Fat Beats is selling. The entire pack is dope. Go buy Union – Analogtronics at Fat Beats and digital on iTunes. BIG thanks to Ms. De La Paz for keeping me in the international know.

Black Milk – Album Of The Year

I don’t have to say much about this album… I really don’t.  The title and the music speaks loud enough for it.  I bought Album Of The Year at Fat Beats, dropped it in the CD player on the way home, and drove the long way home to hear it again.  When I got home, I copied it to my computer, iPod, and my iPhone so I wouldn’t be without it.  It drops today (September 14th), so find the closest record shop and buy Black MilkAlbum Of The Year.

All right, let me get to the music.  The Album Of The Year has that Black Milk sound, but bigger.  If that’s possible…guess it is.  Still having that big drum sound, funky samples, hypnotic rhythmic flow, and heavy hitting -with guests like Danny Brown, you can’t help but put it on repeat. The album overall has a complete sound, but each track can hold it’s own.  You just have to listen to it people.  It’s also worth getting a physical copy.  Very clean design with shiny red soil numbers on the cover making a bold statement.  Go to or order Black Milk – Album Of The Year from Fat Beats…now.  BIG thanks to House ShoesBlack Milk keep making that music.

Trek Life – Everything Changed Nothing

My man Trek Life is not playing.  This is the Year of the Trek, and with his latest album, Everything Changed Nothing, there is no questions about that.  I heard So Supreme from ESPN, and a few other tracks here and there.  The day the album hit stores Trek’s in-store at Fat Beats, I bought the album right then and there.  On Everything Changed Nothing  Trek teamed up with super producer Oddisee to bring you this heavy hitting, west coast inspired album.  I’ve had it in heavy rotation since.  To me, Everything Changed Nothing is an uplifting, inspiring, and a motivating album.  Due West, Wow, & So LA will make you get up and move.  Trust me, you’ll have it in heavy rotation soon enough.  Buy Trek Life – Everything Changed Nothing at Fat Beats or your local record store.  BIG thanks Trek Life & Oddisee for making a great album, and BIG shout to DJ Buddy and J. Bizness.

Record Store Day: April 17th 2010

It’s that time of year again…RECORD STORE DAY!  Last year I went to all my usual spots to check out what was going on.  It was nothing but good times.  Each store had something different going on… and the discounts!  To Beats+Crates Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores not being run off by big corporations, and an appreciation to the artists that make the music.  It’s also a good way to meet the artists and other fans.  Check out the background on how Record Store Day got started and find a participating store near you.  Support Local Businesses and go buy a record.  BIG thanks to all the independent stores, artists, DJs, producers, bloggers, music fans, and all those cats still on the grind.

For more details and participating stores check these links: Record Store Day

Strong Arm Steady – In Search of Stoney Jackson

I’M NOT PLAYING…BUY THIS SH*T NOW! Ok, I’d heard the buzz about Strong Arm Steady’s (Krondon, Phil Da Agony, & Mitchy Slick) In Search Of Stoney Jackson, but it was the midnight release and in-store performance at Fat Beats that pushed me over the edge. (If you haven’t seen it, google that sh*t. I would have paid for that show.) Earlier that day a Strong Arm Steady podcast mixed by House Shoes and J. Rocc was dropped with all the extras. I bought the album that night and bumped it all the way home. Even took the long way. I can’t say anything bad about In Search Of Stoney Jackson; every track is a banger. Funky beats by Madlib, hard-hitting lyricism by Strong Arm Steady, and guest appearances by Phonte, Planet Asia, Tri-State, Fashawn, Talib Kweli, Oh On, Evidence, & more mean there’s no way this could be a bad album. Stop what you’re doing and go buy In Search Of Stoney Jackson! I got mine at Fat Beats. BIG thanks to Strong Arm Steady and Madlib for making great music. You cats set the bar high.

Dynas – The Apartment

I was at Fat Beats talking to House Shoes, and he pulls a record off the rack and says “You should get this”.  It was DynasThe Apartment and at first I was like ” who’s this cat?”  House Shoes put it on the turntable and started going through the tracks.  “And this is why you should check it out”.  I mean with tracks like The Future featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and Family Jewels with Slick Rick you can’t go wrong.  Dynas The Apartment is in heavy heavy rotation on the ipod.  To sum it up when House Shoes talks music…TAKE NOTES. Go buy Dynas – The Apartment at Fat Beats, Amoeba Music, or ask for it at your local record store.  BIG thanks House Shoes for the heads up.

Kev Brown – Random Joints

kevbrown_randomjointsI went to Fatbeats for Fashawn and Exile’s in-store and picked up the album Boy Meets World (dope, must have). I talked to Houseshoes and he was like, “If you want some dope sh*t, check this.” and handed me Kev Brown Random Joints. When Houseshoes talks music, you listen! I bought that too. I got in my car, put Random Joints in, and rocked it back to back. I even drove the long way home. You can buy Random Joints online, but with a physical copy you get 2 additional tracks and an instrumental track! Another reason to grab a physical copy Random Joints is self distributed, meaning  Kev Brown / Low Budget shipped it or dropped it off himself. That’s tight. Either way, go buy Kev Brown’s Random Joints. You’ll be glad you did. Catch up with Kev Brow on Twitter. BIG thanks to Houseshoes for the recommendation and Low Budget for putting out dope stuff. Can’t wait to see what else Low Budget drops.
