I’m a big fan of the HVW8′s artwork and would check their site from time to time. One day I noticed there was a beat tape they sponsored called Attack of THE DEER. I played it over and over and had to meet the cat that put it together. I went to the Jay Stayed Paid event and asked my friend Kyla about J-1 and if he was there. She pointed him out. Clean pumas, fitted hat to match, star tatts on his elbows, and a cobra tattoo on the side of his neck vibing out on a House Shoes DJ set. I introduced myself, and right away we talked about music for hours like we were some old friends catching up. I thought it would be a great idea to have him do a top ten list for B+C. He was down but then flips it with a mix. J was on fire cranking out a mix right after the next. I was trying to keep up because I was doing the artwork for each one. It was always “GO” mode with that dude. A few mixes into it, he called me up and was like lets make this bigger. “Beats+Crates Radio podcast, with guest DJs.” I was like wow, and before I knew it, he had Teeko and Max Kane ready to go. B+C wouldn’t be what it is without J-1.
Our working relationship was a great combo, and he had the projects coming. It was the in between time when Weyez, J, and I would kick it, and that made our bond what it is… family. You can see folks that talked to J-1; he gave them that same attention, and respect. J was always building and growing every time he met someone professionally and personally. J-1 aka THE DEERgrew the Animal Kingdom family worldwide, and touched many, many lives. J-1, you will be truly be missed. Thank you for the music, the laughs, the creativity, and the time. I salute you my brother.
Feel free to leave a comment and please head toMugPush.com to donate to the Coleman family. Thank you.

The good folks at (iN)SECT Records sent an email about this Detroit cat Chanes. I was digging the artwork for (iN)TANGIBLES and gave it a spin. I rocked it for a whole day before I went back and read the email again. Chanes has a good blend of, well a bit of everything, and there’s a couple of snippet tracks on (iN)TANGIBLES I can’t wait to here the whole thing.
“We had heard about Cameron Falsetti a.k.a. Chanes, for a while now, I think first from Detroit’s Ambassador, House Shoes, we dug a little deeper and we started to see a young man with an already prolific career. Reaching out to him to see if he would be down to give us a mix for the (iN), We were not ready for what we got, all songs produced by Chanes with 8 exclusive joints. Artwork by Mike Combs”

I don’t have to say much about this album… I really don’t. The title and the music speaks loud enough for it. I bought Album Of The Year at Fat Beats, dropped it in the CD player on the way home, and drove the long way home to hear it again. When I got home, I copied it to my computer, iPod, and my iPhone so I wouldn’t be without it. It drops today (September 14th), so find the closest record shop and buy Black Milk – Album Of The Year.
All right, let me get to the music. The Album Of The Year has that Black Milk sound, but bigger. If that’s possible…guess it is. Still having that big drum sound, funky samples, hypnotic rhythmic flow, and heavy hitting -with guests like Danny Brown, you can’t help but put it on repeat. The album overall has a complete sound, but each track can hold it’s own. You just have to listen to it people. It’s also worth getting a physical copy. Very clean design with shiny red soil numbers on the cover making a bold statement. Go to or order Black Milk – Album Of The Year from Fat Beats…now. BIG thanks to House Shoes. Black Milk keep making that music.

My man Niles is always on the grind, and one of his many projects that I’m honored to write a post on is Notes For Haiti. There are horrific events and disasters that hit home everyday, and when it passes for some, we must remember there are others still struggling through recovery and need our help. Notes For Haiti is a full length compilation with an all star cast. They not only want you to help the people of Haiti, but want you to nod your head to the beat. Please donate anything that you can and download Notes For Haiti on BandCamp. For more information on Oxfam America click here. BIG thanks Niles for all that you do brotha.

When Danny Brown gets on the mic, it’s a bomb of energy that blows up the place. If you were rocking Danny Brown’sHot Soup, you’ll burn up an ipod playing Detroit State Of Mind 4. I have to say it over and over until someone gets it right, but when House Shoes drops what he’s listening to… YOU LISTEN. House Shoes was talking about Danny Brown and Hot Soup, that’s when I got on. Danny Brown brings this hardness that makes you want to get up and dare someone to mess you with. Yes, drive with Detroit State Of Mind 4 on and you might get a speeding ticket. I’ve been close. And that track Contra… I don’t care how many times that gets on a mixtape…It’s dope every time. Download Danny Brown – Detroit State Of Mind 4 here. Also check out Hybrid on BandCamp. BIG thanks House Shoes for opening my ears to Danny Brown.

I’M NOT PLAYING…BUY THIS SH*T NOW! Ok, I’d heard the buzz about Strong Arm Steady’s (Krondon, Phil Da Agony, & Mitchy Slick) In Search Of Stoney Jackson, but it was the midnight release and in-store performance at Fat Beats that pushed me over the edge. (If you haven’t seen it, google that sh*t. I would have paid for that show.) Earlier that day aStrong Arm Steady podcast mixed by House Shoes and J. Rocc was dropped with all the extras. I bought the album that night and bumped it all the way home. Even took the long way. I can’t say anything bad about In Search Of Stoney Jackson; every track is a banger. Funky beats by Madlib, hard-hitting lyricism by Strong Arm Steady, and guest appearances by Phonte, Planet Asia, Tri-State, Fashawn, Talib Kweli, Oh On, Evidence, & more mean there’s no way this could be a bad album. Stop what you’re doing and go buy In Search Of Stoney Jackson! I got mine at Fat Beats. BIG thanks to Strong Arm Steady and Madlib for making great music. You cats set the bar high.

I was at Fat Beats talking to House Shoes, and he pulls a record off the rack and says “You should get this”. It was Dynas – The Apartment and at first I was like ” who’s this cat?” House Shoes put it on the turntable and started going through the tracks. ”And this is why you should check it out”. I mean with tracks like The Future featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and Family Jewels with Slick Rick you can’t go wrong. DynasThe Apartment is in heavy heavy rotation on the ipod. To sum it up when House Shoes talks music…TAKE NOTES. Go buy Dynas – The Apartment at Fat Beats, Amoeba Music, or ask for it at your local record store. BIG thanks House Shoes for the heads up.
