There will be featured DJ sets by J1 aka The DEER & Houseshoes. Live beat set by Dibia$e & Snowman Jack (Devonwho hope you can make it), and another DJ set by Teeko & Max Kane. Mark de Clive-Lowe and special guest Nia Andrews, Laurnea, and on drums Chris Bailey. I wasn’t familiar with Mark’s work before, but I’m a big fan now. Lots of folks came out, and the ones walking by stoppped to dance. Check out the photos Max took, and read the updated post on Mark’s blog. BIG thanks to Ty, Max, and the whole hvw8’s crew for a dope show…and BBQ. Hope to see you all at the next one.

J1 is puttin in work! I mean this brotha’s crankin it out like crazy. James Brown (R.I.P.) ain’t got nothing on this cat. Just to give you an idea of what I’m talking about; J1 DJ’s at a few spots around LA, is in 2 bands, took time to crank out a podcast for Beats+Crates, few days later plays at the Natural History Museum with Dam Funk, and cranked out YouTube. And that’s just the stuff I know about. I feel like I ran a 5K in a minute givin you the run down. The cool thing is, this is quality stuff J1 is crankin out. YouTube has got a jazzy, hip hop, with a twist of funk to it. I dig it as much as the Attack of the Deer. Check fo yo-self. Download YouTube here and check J1 on MySpace. BIG thanks to the fam J1 & HVW8.

Beats+Crates has been blessed with this exclusive podcast by J1. I met him at the JAY $TAY PAID release party in L.A. and we threw out some ideas. J1 did one better and cranked out this mix of what he’s rockin in only a few days! BIG thanks to J1 for the podcast, and the HVW8 for gettin me hooked on Attack of the Deer.

I Don’t Sleep…I was cruisin around the HVW8’s site to see what’s new with them. I was doing some mad reading and scoping out some paintings they had posted. Then I ran across this crazy cover with a deer on it and a title that read, “Attack of THE DEER.” I was like “this has got to be good with some crazy deer on the cover.” Downloaded it, cranked it up in the headphones, and just played track after track. “Alone” is the first track that got me hooked to it, but it was when I got to “RUCKUS” I started telling people in the office to check it out. I stopped what I was doing and started looking up J-1, the mad beat maker of this beat tape. J-1 is out here in sunny LA by way of Cleveland kickin it with good company. He’s not only a DJ and a beat maker, but also a drummer. This multi-talented cat is jazzin his way into your headphones, so keep your ears open. Download Attackof THE DEER and check out J-1 on MySpace. BIG thanks to Ty and the HVW8 crew.

I got up one Sunday afternoon, and wanted to go check out the sights. I headed straight to the HVW8 spot off Melrose. I met Ty G, real cool cat and down to earth. We talked a little art and then hip hop. Now you gotta understand where the HVW8 gallery is, everyone hanging out on Melrose passes by that joint. So we stepped out in front of the store, and who do we see getting filmed…Carter. Man it was like getting a live show fo-free. But to make a long story short, the HVW8 gallery is one of the locations this video was shot at. “It was a good day.” – Ice Cube. On a sidenote Jerome D is making big moves. Keep yo eyes pealed for his videos. BIG thanks Ty for the convo that day. Carter keep doin yo thing.

What else can i say about Black Spade…out right dope. CH isn’t on this level. I got “To Sever with Love” and waiting for the next album. In between time Black Spade has done a gang of guest apperances, remixes, and hosted a few HVW8 live sessions. He’s a man on the move, so try and catch up if you can. Check out more Black Spade on his MySpace page, and a.k.a. Stoney Rock.
