It’s that time of year again…RECORD STORE DAY! Last year I went to all my usual spots to check out what was going on. It was nothing but good times. Each store had something different going on… and the discounts! To Beats+Crates Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores not being run off by big corporations, and an appreciation to the artists that make the music. It’s also a good way to meet the artists and other fans. Check out the background on how Record Store Day got started and find a participating store near you. Support Local Businesses and go buy a record. BIG thanks to all the independent stores, artists, DJs, producers, bloggers, music fans, and all those cats still on the grind.

The professor of Funk J1 aka THE DEER schools us on Parliament Funkadelic with Cosmic Slop. Take A Trip made me think about every album I owned that sampled those tracks, and that was a dope trip. Cosmic Slop will make you want to dig for more funk, and at the very least will get you out of your seat and dance. J1 drops stuff on us that educates and/or gives us a better appreciation for music (in my case, inspires creativity). If you can catch up with him and chat about music, J1 will definitely drop some knowledge on you. Download Cosmic Slop here and if this doesn’t get you hooked on funk…I don’t know what will. Enjoy. BIG thanks J1 for another dope mix.
Track List:
Parliament – P-funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)
Funkadelic – A Joyful Process
Eddie Hazel – Frantic Moment
Parliament – One Of Those Funky Things
Parliament – (Gloryholastoopid) Pin The Tale On The Funky
Parliament – Bop Gun (Endangered Species)
Parliament – Let’s Play House
Parliament – All Your Goodies Are Gone
Parliament – I’ve Been Watchin You (Move Your Sexy Body)
Bootsy Collins – What’s A Telephone Bill
Parliament – Chocolate City
Funkadelic – Atmosphere
Eddie Hazel – California Dreamin (Reprise)

Not sure what to say, Michael Jackson entertained and influenced generations of people and artists world wide…and going stronger with an upcoming tour. My favorite MJ moment was when my Mother took me to the mall and surprised me by stopping at The Warehouse record store. She knew what I wanted to buy with the money I had saved…Thriller. I didn’t think about the tax. Come on I was a kid, and my Mom paid the rest. I can remember playing that record over and over again (yeah it was a vinyl record). The title track Thriller had narrations by Vincent Price and scared the *ish outta me…every time. I have the record to this day. I have lots of memories like many of you, share them with each other and spread the love.
Thanks for the memories and the music Michael Jackson.

April 18th – I was checkin out some of my favorite record labels and started seeing “Record Store Day,” and wondered what it was all about. I started doing my homework, and it lead me from FatBeats site to Record Store Day’s site. Record Store Day started out as an idea by Chris Brown and developed into a movement in 2007. I call it a movement because of the massive music store chains that put mom & pop shops outta business. This idea has grown into 700 independent record stores and tons of artists participating in the day with discounts and live performances. And these days who can’t go for a discount, or even a live performance. But it’s more then gettin a discount, it’s about telling big businesses to F@#k off, about paying artist for what they produce, and keeping the art of vinyl around. Support Local Businesses and go buy a record.
